A tactical escor shipt may be regarded as the backbone of every fleet. Basically escort ships offer an amazing movement and firepower, but providing low shields and hull.
Once you choose an escort ship, you should go for focus damage, including short but powerful burst attacks, taking down an enemy's shield within seconds. You should train your officers to learn "Rapid fire" which lowers your damage per hit, but massively increases your firing rate. Besides it nearly does the same damage compared with a "normal" attack, it can take down an enemy's shield within seconds. Once the shield is down, torpedos deal a lot of damage including hull damage due to energy weapons.
As a commander of an escort ship you should focus on "normal cannons" (not heavy cannons) as they provide the best dps over time. Heavy cannons do a lot more damage, but you pay it with an decreased angle and at least in PvP it is important to hit an enemy as many times as you can. Below is a weapon configuration which fits best your needs:
Front weapons:
Quantum torpedo (high cooldown, but amazing damage once shields are down)
"Normal" Cannons (decreased range, but high damage)
Rear weapons:
360 degree towers, enabling you to deal damage to enemy at any time. Besides they provide a low damage if an enemy is right behind you, they increase your burst damage a lot. Another good reason do choose them, is to fight heavy torpedos without wasting a cooldown on your front weapons.
Shields:
Pick a shield of your choice, but keep an eye on it's capacity. Escort ships suffer of 60% shield capacity compared to curisers, so choose a shild with a low generation rate but high capacity. In gerneral you won't survive the time the shield needs to regenerate!
Consoles:
Movement is most important, so pick a technical console allowing better turn speed, enabling you to hit your target with your front weapons. Science consoles should provide a good healing for your crewman including faster regenerations (repair hull strengh). Tactical consoles heavily depend on your energy weapons and torpedos, so focus on them!
Items:
Allways have weapon and shield batteries around. Weapon batteries allow you to deal out burst damage even after leaving full impulse (which decreases energy at all). Always keep in mind to fire up "Emergency energy to shields" (if you have two abilities, choose the lower once as it decreases shield damage). If you're in trouble, don't mind to use your shield battery, they heavily increase shield power and provides you with the ability to attack an enemy once again.
Energy configuration:
Usually I choose 75 weapon energy and 75 shield energy as it provides you both with a noticeable boost (75 energy doubles the rate at all). Don't waste energy on your engine, as you're fast enough already. But (!) I don't know how auxiallary enegy affects your skills (e.g. emergency power to shields), so please check it out first.
Hope to give you a tiny adivce on using escort ships
