Just curious as to what everyone thinks is the pinnacle of beam weapons. Whether it be a combination of a few or all out for just one specific beam weapon.

Just to get the ball rolling. I use a combination of Tetryon, Anti-Proton, and Phaser arrays. Normally in the front I try to go with a dual phaser array and a tetryon array. As I command a science vessel I only have 6 total weapon slots split equal fore and aft. On the back I tend to use another phaser array and an anti-proton array.

I'm pretty much a traditionalist; I prefer to have all one type of weapon outfitted on my ship. My personal preference has to be tetryon weaponry. As far as the fore weapon slots go, I tend to use dual beams, despite their small firing arc. Since I fly a fleet escort I can use the dual beams in conjunction with heavy cannons and torpedoes to devastate enemies on approach.
As for the aft, I usually use a standard array of whatever weapon type I'm using. Usually this allows me to keep firing from most angles due to their wider firing arc.

My layouts very similar to Gallaways although I use an assault crusier so 4 slots fore and aft, the extra slots are fillled with 360deg turrets they don't hit as hard but they help weaken no mather what direction your headed. Plus some mines at the back fro some extra bang.

I've been thinking about replacing my aft torpedo launcher with either a turret or mine tech; but I've never actually used either before and I'm not entirely sure how effective mines are anyhow. Think it'd be worth the switch-over? I'd still have two beam arrays regardless.

I,ve found it better to drop 1 aft aray and keep the torps, mines are effective when facing large numbers of ships (ie fleet battles), quantum mines seem to be the most effective. Coping a bunch of mines in the face backed up by and torp salvo is going to wreak anybodys day. As for turrets anti proton or phaser seem to work for me both are good at weakening sheilds.

Do turrets really do a lot of damage or they just fire all the time so the damage adds up over time? I never really gave them a chance so I have no knowledge on them.

There are 2 types of turrets available 180 deg - these are only available for use on the front of the vessel these generally have more punch.
360 deg - less powerful but they can be placed fore or aft and will continue to fire at the target.
I only started putting turrets on my tier 4 ships and above as the lower ships didn't have the slots available.
Thinking of making an all turret/torp cuiser any thoughts guys?

That would be an interesting combination. I say test it out see what the results are.

Yup, I'm with Kee. The only way you can see if it works is to test it out.
I'm a little dubious as to the effectiveness of it though, cannons have a small firing arc after all; escorts have the turn rate to use them effectively, but I'm unsure whether cruisers would be able to keep the enemy in sights.

Where do you acquire turrets? Are they available via exploration merits or on the exchange?

Where do you acquire turrets? Are they available via exploration merits or on the exchange? Most of the time yes you can buy them using EM's & Badges, there are some on the exchange but there're pricey. I've scored a couple during DSE's.

I tried out the turret/torp combo on my star cuiser (leaving my assault cuiser's fit out as is), wasn't easy to source enough of the same type (ie phaser/distrupors) so I've gone for a mix.
up front 2x180deg turrets, 1x360deg, Q/torps
aft slots
3x 360deg turrets & Q/torps
tested it in the usual way, DSE in the sirus sector bashing klingons, the effect (due to the varying types of beams) looked like Xmas Lights, very nasty Xmas lights. Its not really practical if your up against AI thats level with your character unless you've got back up. But fun none the less.
